The Internet For Everybody
Version 1.0.1
Hardware and Operating Requirements (Windows)
QuickTime is required to run the video segments in
The Internet For Everybody. QuickTime 2.0 is
included on the CD-ROM, in case you do not already
have it.
The system requirements for this application are:
486 or above (MPC compliant)
33 MHZ, 6 MB RAM (8 MB preferred)
Microsoft Windows 3.1
256 color display
Sound card
Double speed CD-ROM drive
To install and run The Internet For Everybody
1. Place the CD-ROM in your drive.
2. Make sure no application programs are running as this
can interfere with the proper operation of the installer.
In the Windows Program Manager, type x:\INSTALL.EXE
from the File/Run menu, where x is the letter of your
CD-ROM drive. Answer the question that the installer
asks you.
3. The Apple QuickTime 2.0 installer will run.
Choose the "Local" installation (the default), and if
the installer finds old versions of QuickTime on your
system, allow the installer to remove them.
4. To run, click on the Internet For Everybody icon in
the Program Manager.
Notes
We suggest that you turn off any screen saver you have
while using The Internet For Everybody. Otherwise, the
screen saver may start up while you are watching the
program, interrupting your viewing until you move the
mouse or hit a key.
The program runs best when the screen resolution is set
for 640 x 480, with 16-bit color (also called thousands
of colors, 16K colors, and 64K colors). Some older video
cards and drivers may work at only one or another setting.
The supplied version of QuickTime is 2.0. It is very
important that you let the QuickTime installer remove any
old versions of QuickTime that it finds on your system.
Multiple versions of QuickTime can cause problems with
proper playing of movies. The QuickTime installer also
creates a program group.
The Internet For Everybody installer makes no changes to
your AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS files.
To uninstall The Internet For Everybody, simply delete
the Program Manager icon and program group.
If you the installer replaced QuickTime 1.x with version
2.0, you may still have the C:\QTW\BIN in your path in
the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. This does not harm, but may be
removed if desired.
Trouble Shooting
Can't find CD drive: Check your CD drive. Try reinstalling
your CD software.
Movies don't play at all: You can run the installer again,
to remove old versions of QuickTime, if you didn't allow
the installer to remove them during installation. Exit
from Windows and restart Windows before running the
installer again.
A frequent reason that movies won't play properly is not
having the most recent video driver. Contact the vendor
for the latest version.
Movies don't play well: You may have a single-speed CD-ROM
drive, or too little RAM. We suggest not running other
programs at the same time you are using The Internet For
Everybody.
If you have many TSRs, which are programs that stay in
memory all the time, the program may not behave well because
of insufficient memory or because the tie up the CPU. You
can deinstall such programs to improve performance. TSRs
include network software, screen savers, virus checkers,
and file recovery programs.
The image gets messed up, or shows parts of previous images:
The program may need more RAM. Try strategies in previous
paragraphs.
Color is poor in movies, movies appear grainy: If your
machine is capable of thousands of colors (16K or 64K), set
the display using your monitor driver application or control
panel.
Image is too small: Set your monitor to 640 x 480 resolution.
With this setting, The Internet For Everybody will occupy
the whole screen.
Sound doesn't play: One reason that the sound won't play
properly is improper installation of the sound driver
software. Try reinstalling it. Note that there may be a
separate installation for using sound in Windows (in addition
to DOS).
You may not have the most recent sound driver. Contact the
vendor for the latest version.
Errors in QuickTime (Apple) installation: Don't be
scared by the error messages. Just exit Windows, run
Windows again, and retry the installation. There is no
need to remove files, as the QuickTime installer suggests.
